Marcia G McQuitty, PhD
Marcia Granger McQuitty felt God’s call to full time Christian ministry at an early age. After exploring colleges in Virginia and surrounding states she felt led to enroll at Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. As a student she was surrounded by Christian professors who challenged her both spiritually and academically. After serving three summers in mission opportunities in the states on the west coast, she then followed God’s leadership and enrolled in the school of theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. As a first year student she met David McQuitty and two years later they married. After completing her education with a BA in English and an MDiv with biblical languages, she and David followed the Lord’s leadership and became involved in the educational ministry at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
After serving ten years in the local church, Marcia and her husband followed the Lord’s leading and returned to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. While her husband pursued his PhD, Marcia took care of their first son, Michael, and pursued other avenues of ministry. She was given the opportunity to write discipleship-training materials for youth for the Sunday School Board of the SBC, write articles for the Virginia Baptist State paper, and continue her education by completing another degree at Southwestern…. Master of Christian Education. It was at this time that church ministry opportunities opened and she became Minister of Preschool Education at Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Within several years God opened new opportunities with the arrival of two sons, Richard and Stephen, enlarging the family circle. During these busy years, God opened other doors of service. Marcia has led leadership training conferences for the SBC and the BGCT, has written articles for Lifeway Christian Resources, and soon felt led to pursue a PhD in childhood/parent education at SWBTS.
With the completion of the PhD, Marcia served one year as International Director at SWBTS and was then asked to join the faculty of the School of Education at SWBTS where she served for twenty years. It was during this time that God expanded her opportunities for doing conferences and she went to the islands of Barbados and Cuba to teach. Marcia served for several years on the program committee for the international Child Spirituality Conference, and as program committee member and then president of the Baptist Association of Christian Educators. She was also given the opportunity to write several chapters for text books in the areas of preschool/childhood education, and write stewardship lessons for children for the Stewardship Development Association of the SBC.
Following her retirement from SWBTS in July 2012, Marcia has served as volunteer WMU and Women’s Ministry Consultant for the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention in Hawaii, then interim Preschool/Children/Family minister at Gambrell Street Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. She currently divides her time between her family of three sons, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, and working in Hawaii with students at the University of Hawaii and serving the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention as needed. She has been approved to teach contextualized learning courses for Golden Gate Seminary in California and is an adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University.
